This woman was set on fire
by Iraqi policemen because she was a Kurd. Such cruelty
has laid the ground for decades of hatred. I found her
recovering from her burns in hospital.
Gaining access to the PKK
took days of negotiating and a tortuous trip through mined
terrain. In the past they had occasionally kidnapped western
journalists but with us they were courteous.
With the world's attention
on southern Iraq, US special forces and rag-tag peshmerga
began advancing slowly towards Mosul and Kirkuk. This
is a report from their front line.
After months of waiting
on the front-line the Iraqis finally folded. With a
couple of close colleagues we were the first westerners
into Kirkuk. For many Kurds, it meant the end of decades
of living as refugees.
